Antique Oak Coffer Trunk - Panelled Blanket Box Chest - 18th Century Solid Wood
Description
An antique 18th century oak coffer of traditional construction, offering generous storage and a wonderful rustic character. Ideal as a blanket chest, hall settle chest, toy box, or period country house storage piece.
Constructed from solid oak boards with pegged and nailed construction throughout. The front features three fielded panels framed by substantial corner stiles, while the interior retains its original candle box. The lid is formed from wide oak boards with early ironwork and hand-worked construction details visible throughout. The numerous signs of hand craftsmanship, including irregular boards, early fixings, and primitive joinery, suggest an 18th century date. Unsure of the exact age, but more than happy to help with any further questions.
Condition
In well used antique condition. Showing significant age and use with surface scratches, scuffs, knocks, dents, wear, and historic repairs throughout. The top has shrinkage gaps between the boards, old marks, scratches, and signs of centuries of use. There is wear around the edges, corners, feet, and lid. The iron lock plate remains present, although the lock mechanism appears incomplete and no key is present. One of the timber supports to the lid has been changed previously.
The interior shows age-related wear, staining, and surface marks. There are historic repairs and replacement fixings visible in places. Various old splits, movement, and construction irregularities are present as expected for a piece of this age. The coffer remains solid and usable with excellent period character.
Would benefit from a good clean and polish, or ideal for light restoration.
